Main Content
Introduction to Mega Evolution: Mega Evolution makes a triumphant return in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, bringing with it both familiar faces and brand-new Mega forms. If you played Pokémon X/Y or ORAS, you’ll recall that Mega Evolution temporarily boosts a Pokémon into a stronger form during battle. In Legends: Z-A, Megas work a bit differently due to the real-time battle system: Mega Evolution can only be triggered once you fill a special Mega gauge in battle (by dealing and taking damage or by picking up energy orbs dropped by rogue Megas)[29]. Once activated, your Pokémon will Mega Evolve and stay in that form for a limited time, which can be extended by further orb pickups[10]. After the duration, it reverts and the gauge must be refilled to Mega evolve again. This cooldown-based approach adds a strategic layer – you might want to save your Mega activation for when a boss goes into a frenzy mode, for example.
How to Unlock Mega Evolution
You won’t have access to Mega Evolution from the start. In the story, the ability to Mega Evolve is unlocked during Main Mission 9: “Chase that Mysterious Pokémon”[18], roughly 6-8 hours into the game. At this point, the game provides you with a Key Stone (needed for your character to enable Mega Evolution) and your first Mega-capable Pokémon (Lucario, briefly). After this mission, you’re free to Mega Evolve any eligible Pokémon in your team, provided you have the right Mega Stone for that species. Initially, you might only have one or two Mega Stones, but many more become available as you progress.
Collecting Mega Stones
Pokémon Legends: Z-A offers multiple ways to obtain Mega Stones, which are the items that enable specific Pokémon to Mega Evolve:
- Story Rewards: Some Mega Stones are earned automatically from boss fights. For example, beating the rogue Mega Absol in early Chapter 1 gives you the Absolite[14], and other rogue Mega bosses drop their corresponding stones[30]. By completing the main storyline, you’ll likely have a handful of Mega Stones for key Pokémon.- Shop Purchases (Stone Emporium): Lumiose City’s Stone Emporium (south district) sells a selection of Mega Stones once you unlock Mega Evolution. Bring your wallet
- these can be pricey (e.g., Charizardite X/Y cost 100,000 each in-game currency)[31][32]. Stones for fan-favorites like Gengar, Scizor, Garchomp, etc., are sold here for a high price, which incentivizes participating in the Z-A Royale and side quests to earn money.- Quasartico Inc. (Mega Shard Exchange): A new mechanic in Z-A is the collection of Mega Shards
- pink crystal fragments you find by defeating clusters of wild “Mega energy” crystals in the city. At the Quasartico Inc. building in northern Lumiose, you can trade these shards for rare Mega Stones not sold in shops[33][34]. This includes stones for Pokémon like Pidgeot, Houndoom, Heracross, etc., often at the cost of 180–360 shards per stone[35][36]. Essentially, exploring and clearing out those crystal formations in Wild Zones pays off in letting you Mega Evolve a broader range of Pokémon.- Online Ranked Rewards: To keep players engaged, Legends: Z-A also ties some Mega Stones to its online Ranked Battle seasons. Notably, the Mega Stones for the Kalos starter trio (Chesnaught, Delphox, Greninja) were announced to be distributed across three online tournament seasons[37]. If you’re into competitive play, it’s worth joining those events to grab these exclusive stones. However, if you prefer solo play, don’t worry
- these may be made available via NPC gifts in a future update or single-player challenge. (Keep an eye on PokemonTeam.net news for such announcements.)
List of Mega-Capable Pokémon in Z-A
There are over 60 Mega Evolutions accessible in Pokémon Legends: Z-A[9]. This includes all classic Mega Evolutions from Gen 6/7 and several new ones introduced in Z-A. Here we highlight some categories:
- Returning Mega Evolutions: All the originals like Mega Charizard (X and Y), Mega Blastoise, Mega Venasaur, Mega Mewtwo X/Y, Mega Gengar, Gardevoir, Lucario, etc., are present. If a Pokémon had a Mega form in past games, you can assume it’s in Z-A unless that Pokémon itself isn’t in the Pokédex. (For example, Latios/Latias are not in Z-A’s Pokédex, hence no Soul Dew for them.)- New Mega Evolutions Unique to Z-A: This is where things get exciting. Z-A expands the concept by giving Mega forms to Pokémon that never had them. Some fan-favorites include: Mega Feraligatr (Water/Dragon type, turning the Johto gator into a serpentine dragon-like beast), Mega Meganium (Grass/Fairy type, adorned with larger petals and supportive aura), Mega Emboar (Fire/Ground, as if Emboar wasn’t explosive enough!), Mega Raichu (yes, Pikachu’s evolved form gets love
- in fact, two Mega forms, one for Kanto Raichu and one for Alolan Raichu are part of the upcoming DLC[38]), Mega Eelektross (gains an additional typing, maintaining zero weaknesses), Mega Dragonite (a long-anticipated form, making Dragonite even more of a powerhouse with improved speed and a sleeker look), and quirky ones like Mega Sudowoodo (Rock/Grass type, it finally becomes a real tree!).- We won’t list all ~62 Mega Pokémon here, but our table below provides a summary of new Mega forms and where to get their stones. (In an actual guide, this could be a table with columns: Pokémon
- Mega Type(s)
- Stone Location.) For example: “Feraligatr
- Water/Dragon
- Obtain Feraligatrite by defeating Wild Zone 12 boss” or “Eelektross
- Electric
- Buy Eelektrossite for 240 shards at Quasartico Inc.[36].”- Version-specific or DLC Megas: Note that a couple of Mega Stones are DLC-exclusive (like a teaser for Hoopa’s two forms or the aforementioned Raichu forms). These won’t be accessible until the expansion releases, so we’ll update this guide when that content arrives.
Mega Evolution Battle Tips
Using Mega Evolutions effectively in Z-A requires timing. Here are some tips:
- Only one of your Pokémon can be Mega Evolved on the field at a time (even if multiple team members have Mega Stones). Plan who your “priority Mega” is for a given battle. Often it’s wise to Mega Evolve the Pokémon that can exploit the opponent’s weakness or that needs the power boost to survive.- Watch the Mega gauge: Don’t activate Mega Evolution at the very start of a fight unless you can maintain it. It might be better to whittle the enemy down, let your gauge fill (particularly in boss fights where the enemy might have multiple phases), then Mega Evolve to finish them off quickly.- Use the “plus” moves: In Z-A, Mega-evolved Pokémon get access to enhanced “+” moves (shown with a + sign in their move list)[39]. These are powered-up versions of one of their regular moves. For example, Mega Absol might have “Night Slash+” dealing extra damage. These can often break through boss shields or do massive stagger damage
- leverage them during your Mega window.- Be mindful of Mega weaknesses: Some Pokémon gain or change type upon Mega evolving (e.g., Charizard X gaining Dragon, which makes it weak to Dragon and Fairy where regular Charizard wasn’t). Always check your Pokémon’s type chart after Mega
- our Team Building page and Team Builder tool can help recalc your coverage with Megas in mind. You may need to adapt your strategy if your Mega form has different resistances/weaknesses.
